Prop. 77 Court Decision Huge Win for Arnold
The Supreme Court decision to put Prop. 77 (redistrcting reform) back on the ballot is a huge win for the Governor's team...and they needed one.
I have talked to too many of the "big corporate donors" that Schwarzenegger needs to fund his effort, and the only measure they really care about is this one. With it off the ballot, I was hearing a lot of "what's the points" from them. With 77 back in the game, and the ballot now certain, Arnold's fundraising for the effort should pick up.

Although four people signed onto the grant of review (a majority of the CA Supreme Court), that doesn't mean that all four will vote to reinstate the proposition (although that is the most likely outcome)- some of the Justices may want to have a definitive CA Supreme Court ruling on the matter, and will vote to keep the thing off come argument time.
Pete, you are certainly correct that they may toss it after the election, although if it passes, I would find that unlikely.
My main point, though, is that the uncertainty about what would be on the ballot, and whether we would have a ballot at all, has been hurting the California Recovery Team (Arnold) fundraising. I think that may pick up now.
Plus, all the corporate types love Prop 77...they think it will take the hard right and hard left edges of the caucuses in the Legislature.
There is much talk this weekend that Arnold and the Democrats are in negotiations for a "global deal" involving all measures on the Nov. ballot. What that means nobody knows, but the Governor's numbers are sinking among Republican voters and any "deal" that looks like a sell-out will not go down well with the grassroots. Also, Assembly GOP leader Kevin McCarthy has stated that he will oppose the Governor if part of the deal is to put redistricting off until the end of the decade.
This should be a very interesting week...

This is Huge in the sense that Arnold is now set up to garner a big win in November and then use that to announce for re-election next year.

Who gives a hoot what McCarthy opposes or doesn't oppose?
He's the one who recruited lousy candidates in districts the GOP could have won (AD 30, 53).
He owes the Governor, big time.
Prop 77 in my opinion should mean a windfall of business money for Republican candidates if the measure passes. For too long business interest have believed it to be more of a sound business decision to help Democrats over Republicans in some races because Republicans were a weak force in the Assembly and Senate. If 77 passes I think many business PACs will start giving to Republicans over Democrats the vast majority of the time with the districts redrawn.
